Autopsy to be done on Florida child killer

TALLAHASSEE — An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted on child-killer John Evander Couey.

Florida Department of Corrections spokeswoman Gretl Plessinger also said Thursday that a relative has claimed the body.

Couey was awaiting execution for kidnapping, raping and burying 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford alive in Citrus County four years ago. He had been ill for some time and was taken to a Jacksonville hospital Aug. 12. He died there Wednesday.

Plessinger said officials didn’t have any information on the exact cause of death but that Couey had been ill for some time.
